Work commenced on the redevelopment of the Shepparton Senior Citizens Centre in Welsford Street this week with construction expected to take approximately four months.
The existing building had several internal issues including deteriorating plumbing, lifting floor tiles and a collapsing ceiling.
Greater Shepparton City Council committed $400,000 in this year’s budget to undertake the redevelopment to ensure the building meets future needs and community expectations for a functional, attractive facility.
Internally there will be an upgrade of the toilets, cosmetic improvements and greater accessibility including lift access to the stage, and widened door widths throughout the building. A commercial kitchen will be installed providing an opportunity for activities and events to be catered for.
The Senior Citizens group has been relocated to another location and immunisation sessions are being held at the Greater Shepparton Community Room at Riverside Plaza, Kialla. Sessions are held on the first, second and fourth Thursday of every month from 9.30-10.30am.
The Centre was established in 1939 as an Infant Welfare Centre and officially opened in 1964 as the Shepparton Senior Citizens Centre which was fully utilised for several decades by a large thriving Seniors Citizens Club.
