In a visit to Shepparton today, The Honourable John Eren, Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Sport and Veterans visited the Aboriginal Street Art Project mural along Fryers Street in Shepparton.
The mural along the Goulburn Valley Water wall features both Sir Douglas Nicholls and William Cooper, two individuals who have greatly contributed to the Aboriginal community and Australian society.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Dinny Adem was pleased Minister Eren had the opportunity to view the mural, and thanked him for his visit.
“I look forward to seeing this exciting project progress in partnership with the local community,” said Cr Adem.
The Aboriginal Street Art Project was launched in May earlier this year in partnership with Rumbalara Co-Operative and Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation. The project will feature a series of murals throughout the CBD that will be dedicated to recognising the local Aboriginal people and the Aboriginal Culture and History within the region.
The second stage of this project is to recognise two significant local Aboriginal females that will be selected by the local Aboriginal Elders. Both females will be announced later in the year.
The project will then proceed to recognise the local Aboriginal history and culture through both contemporary and traditional art.
