Greater Shepparton City Council today announced the winning design for the Sir Murray Bourchier Memorial, the Horseman, designed by artist Paul Smits.
At an official launch Mr Smits was presented with a $5000 prize for his winning design.
“There were three designs residents were able to vote for the horseman, stone plinth and the four pillars and by submitting their suggestions online or at the Council offices the winning design selected by residents was the horseman,” said Councillor Kevin Ryan
“It is exciting that we now have a design and we will continue to work with the Bourchier Memorial Working group to ensure the project progresses”.
“This horseman statue is a great way to recognise the work of Sir Murray Bourchier” said Cr Ryan.
Sir Murray Bourchier was enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in August 1914. He led the charge at the Battle of Beersheba. In 1920 he entered the Legislative Assembly as the Victorian Farmers’ Union Member for the Goulburn Valley. Between1924-35 he was unopposed as the Country Party Member.
Sir Murray Bourchier later died in London in December 1937.
