Upgrades to the Shepparton Showgrounds are nearing completion with the new grassed surface well on the way to being ready for the first event in September.
“The $1.5m Showgrounds works will enhance Shepparton’s reputation as a key major events location and allow for larger events and more events with a positive economic benefit for the region,” said Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Investment Attraction, Geraldine Christou.
“The works on the Showgrounds have made it more accessible for all potential users and with higher quality facilities we will be in a position to attract bigger and different events than previously held,” she said.
The works included a new grassed surface and improved drainage and irrigation to prevent flooding on the main arena, two new light towers, a new bitumen promenade to link current east and west promenades, and power boxes along the promenade for external power access.
“With a contribution of $500,000 from State government we were also able to add a new toilet block adjacent to the eastern multipurpose pavilion so there are now 10 additional toilets including an all-abilities toilet,” said Ms Christou.
“All of these initiatives will lead to significant improvements for major events and user groups and a more attractive gateway to the eastern entrance to Shepparton. Council’s Investment Attraction Department will be able to proactively sell the showgrounds to potential new major and special events organisers from across Australia.”
“The potential to attract major music festivals, motoring events, expos, field days, circuses, celebrations and exhibitions could generate potentially millions of dollars for the region,” she said.
“The upgrades also provide a first class facility for community events, festivals and activities in a safe and enclosed environment. These Showgrounds will be one of the best and most attractive complexes in regional Australia,” said Ms Christou.
“Improvements at the Showgrounds will enhance Greater Shepparton City Council’s reputation as a key major events destination in building quality facilities to host major events and attracting visitors to our region, a key element in the 2013 to 2017 Council Plan.”
The first events to utilise the new grassed arena will be the Shepparton Swap Meet and the Spring Car Nationals.
