Shepparton Animal Shelter cares for unwanted animals

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Citizen Services Laurienne Winbanks said Animal Shelter Officers found the three Labrador cross puppies, approximately eight weeks old, on the road at the front gate of the Shelter.

“The three puppies were very hungry and dehydrated and one had a broken leg. They were immediately taken to the Council’s Animal Shelter and Veterinarian for care and attention,” said Ms Winbanks.

“It is an offence to abandon an animal under the Domestic Animals Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The puppy with the broken leg was in immense pain when we found him and required urgent veterinary attention. We arranged for him to have surgery and rehabilitation in foster care and he is doing well.”

Ms Winbanks urged anyone who has an animal they no longer want, they can no longer care for, if they cannot afford veterinary treatment or if their circumstances have changed, to take the animal to the Shepparton Animal Shelter or contact Council for advice.

“The Shepparton Animal Shelter will provide the animal with the care it needs. Please bring the animal into the Shelter and do not leave them at the front gate. Shelter staff are there to help. You don’t have to provide any information, pay any money and we make no judgements. We want what’s best for the animal.”

The Shepparton Animal Shelter is open 8:15am-4:30pm Monday to Friday and is located at 125 Wanganui Road Shepparton. Alternatively, please contact Council via telephone 03 5832 9700 for advice or assistance.

If anyone has any information regarding the person responsible for abandoning the three Labrador cross puppies, please call Council on 5832 9700. Community Rangers will investigate and commence legal action if a person is found to have abandoned an animal.
