Greater Shepparton City Council and Victoria State Emergency Service (SES) have joined forces to ensure people at risk of floods in the Katandra West, Tallygaroopna and Congupna areas are properly informed with the development of new Flood Guides.
These guides will be launched at public meetings at:
SES members in conjunction with other emergency services will deliver flood guides to homes, farms and businesses in these areas after the official launch.
Additional copies of the local Flood Guides will be available from pick up points including:
Katandra West
Tallygaroopna
Congupna
These Flood Guides include a flood map highlighting flood zones and handy information for residents, farms and businesses to inform them about their risk of flood and help them ensure they’re properly prepared.
“In many cases, the biggest impact from floods in this area is on roads and bridges, often impassable, damaged by powerful, floodwater or covered by debris” said Neil Payn, SES North East Regional Operations Manager.
SES has been working with Moria Shire , the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority and the Federal Government’s Natural Disaster Resilience Scheme to produce a guide for key flood-prone towns in the region as part of a state-wide plan.
“SES knows it’s vital for families and communities to be aware of flood risks, put together an emergency survival kit and prepare and practice a flood emergency plan… basically be ready before a flood even happens,” Mr Payn said.
“SES and other emergency services work hard together to reduce the impact of floods and storms on our community. These new flood guides will help SES and Council work in partnership with communities to reduce flood damage and help our people keep safe. Floods cause more damage in dollar terms and lives lost per year than any other natural hazard in Australia, so understanding how to prepare and be informed is important” he said.
It’s not a question of if the next flood with occur, but when. Experience shows that people who prepare for flooding reduces damage, save money, make better decisions and recover more quickly.
During the delivery of the flood guides, all SES members will be in uniform and carry official identification. They will not be asking for donations and do not need to come inside your home. If you are not available when they call, a flood information pack will be left in your letterbox.
SES is committed to building a flood and storm-resilient Victoria. To this end, over 80 flood guides are being developed for high risk flood areas in the state.
