Patricia Smith Kindergarten has created a ‘book house’ as part of the Street Library initiative, which provides a convenient way to share the joys of reading within the local community.
Street Libraries are a home for books located on the front yard of properties, allowing people to simply reach in and take what interests them; when they are done, they can return them to the Street Library, or pass them on to friends or family.
The Street Libraries program creates access to great stories for all to enjoy for free with the aim of encouraging literacy and bringing neighborhoods closer together. Street Libraries function on the honor system; everyone contributes to ensure there are always quality books inside.
The Patricia Smith Kindergarten’s book house has been beautifully decorated by the children currently attending the Centre, with families already making the most of the free book service.
“The Patricia Smith Kindergarten’s book house has books for all ages including babies, children, teenagers and adults”, explains Greater Shepparton City Council Director Community Kaye Thomson. “Everyone is welcome to make, borrow or take a book; with lots of good book choices available for the whole neighborhood.”
“The initiative is very convenient with no checking books in or out. If residents have books they think people would enjoy, they can simply place them into the box and take anything that interests them.
“The goal of the initiative is to encourage literacy and getting involved in the community, so I encourage people to make the most of the book house and share with others how they can be part of the program too,” suggests Ms Thomson.
The Patricia Smith Kindergarten Street Library is located at 38 Packham Street, Shepparton. For more information about the Street Library initiative, visit streetlibrary.org.au/
