Greater Shepparton City Council will be conducting planned maintenance and upgrade works at the Shepparton Aerodrome, which are scheduled to commence on 22 January with the runway closed for approximately one week.
Director Infrastructure/City Engineer Phil Hoare said “The works primarily involve the resealing of the runway and reinstatement of the line marking, however council is also taking advantage of the closure period to undertake some other improvements including adjustments to the runway lights, line-marking of the taxi-ways and some other drainage upgrade works.”
“Council staff have worked closely with stakeholders and emergency services in planning these works to minimise disruption and ensure emergency services can operate over this period,” he said.
As part of managing the aerodrome, Council is responsible to maintain the infrastructure to meet the appropriate standards which are audited by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
Council has estimated the cost of the works to be approximately $450,000. January was selected following discussions with key stakeholders, the aerodrome advisory committee and emergency services. A Relevant Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) will be in place during the works, which is the formal method of communicating the status of the aerodrome to pilots.
The Shepparton Aerodrome has been utilised since 1967 with the last major upgrade carried out in 2001. Each year Council undertakes routine maintenance at the facility including weed spraying, grass slashing, clearing of drains, maintenance of the lights and other infrastructure. Council has trained Aerodrome Reporting Officers (AROs) who audit the airport on a regular basis as per the CASA guidelines.
Anyone who requires additional information on the works and the arrangements in place during the works can contact Council’s Customer Service Centre on 5832 9700.
