Australia’s Largest Community Event Promoting Sustainability, Creativity and Fun!
The national community event Garage Sale Trail, now in its third year, has attracted the support of over 110 local councils across the country to encourage Australians everywhere to come together on the same day - Saturday 26 October 2013 - to reduce waste and reuse pre-loved items in a fun and creative way.
Registration is now open and free via www.garagesaletrail.com.au. Registration is available to individuals, households, local businesses, schools, community groups, makers and creators, cultural institutions and charities.
Greater Shepparton Mayor Jenny Houlihan said council is proudly supporting Garage Sale Trail which promotes positive community connections and provides a novel way for residents to reduce waste and make money.
"While Garage Sale Trail generates local economic activity and provides residents with a fun day of buying, selling and connecting with local people, the organisation's aims to reduce waste and reuse items which otherwise might end up in landfill is a very important one," Cr. Houlihan said.
"I am encouraging our community to register their garage sales now to be part of what is fast becoming one of the largest sustainability and community events in Australia."
Darryl Nichols and Andrew Valder, co-founders of Garage Sale Trail, a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to create positive social and environmental change, said the event to date has redistributed approximately one million items from landfill, generated more than $1 million in local economic activity, facilitated $3 million in fundraising and created hundreds of thousands of neighbourly connections across Australia.
"It's fantastic that Greater Shepparton City Council is bringing Garage Sale Trail to its local community," said Nichols.
"Our partnership with councils is key to the success of Garage Sale Trail and council participation is the reason that Garage Sale Trail is growing so fast," Valder added.
