Greater Shepparton City Council, the Greater Shepparton Positive Ageing Advisory Committee (PAAC) and the Goulburn Valley Community Legal Centre will be hosting a community BBQ in the Maude St Mall on Friday 13 June between 11am and 2pm in support of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
Council will also be lighting the Mooroopna Water Tower and the big Gum Tree in Monash Park purple on Sunday 15 June to mark the actual day of WEAAD and to help raise awareness of the issue.
Greater Shepparton Mayor Jenny Houlihan encouraged people to come along to the bbq.
"This is an opportunity to gain information and raise awareness about elder abuse, which many people would not be aware of in our community," Cr Houlihan said.
"Our older residents are among the most vulnerable and we all need to come together and ensure their safety.
"To further show your support, people are encouraged to wear purple on the day."
The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day event will be held on Friday 13 June between 11am and 2pm in the Maude Street Mall. In attendance will be members of Council's Positive Ageing Advisory Committee and Goulburn Valley Community Legal Service.
