Greater Shepparton has been announced host of the 2018 Netball Victoria Beach Netball series after expressing interest in the event. The event will take place at the Victoria Park Lake on a temporary built beach stadium on the weekend of February 10 and 11, 2018.
Greater Shepparton is one of the two regional locations where the Beach Netball competitions will take place. Lakes Entrance will host the event in January followed by Shepparton in February.
Beach Netball is an extension to the traditional game of netball, with the same rules and regulations, the exception being that participants aren’t required to wear shoes and the game is played on a half-court marked out in the sand. Beach Netball teams can be made up of all-female and mixed players. Players must be aged 16 years or older.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Cr Dinny Adem was excited that Shepparton had been named as one of the two Victorian venues to host this new and unique form of netball.
“Many teams enjoy playing beach netball to serve as training for the up and coming netball season. Beach netball can be played all-female or mixed teams, so I suggest local netball teams register before 31 January to have the unique experience of playing their beloved sport on sand.
“Hosting this event continues our tradition of hosting high profile events and will give netball enthusiasts the opportunity to watch some fast and a different format of netball.
"This event also helps build our reputation as the sporting capital of regional Victoria, and adds to our impressive list of recently acquired new major events including the return of the World Tour International Beach Volleyball in February 2018, the securing of the Victoria Long Course Swimming Championships on the Australia Day weekend, the Little Athletics Victoria Northern Region Track and Field Championships at the redeveloped Shepparton Sports City and the return of the Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Limited Basketball Classic for three years from 2018.
“Council continues to attract the biggest and best events to Greater Shepparton boosting employment, tourism, entertainment and liveability for our community. Our teams are working hard creating jobs, keeping business busy and the economy strong.” said Cr Adem.
