The ANZAC Commemorative Naming Project has been launched by the Victorian Government and recognises the 100 year anniversary of the first ANZAC landings at Gallipoli in 1915.
During the ANZAC centenary period (2014-2018), the Victorian Government is conducting a commemorative naming project in partnership with naming authorities. The project is an opportunity for Victorians to acknowledge men and women in the community who have served in an operational capacity in the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces or those in the community that have displayed the ANZAC spirit during World War I.
Greater Shepparton City Council is now calling on the community to research people connected with Greater Shepparton who have made such contributions to Australia and New Zealand's World War I efforts.
The ANZAC Commemorative Naming Project offers an opportunity for the community, developers and Council to recognise and record the wartime service and sacrifice of Greater Shepparton's military service people and locals who supported Australia and New Zealand's military cause during World War I.
It is envisaged that a compendium of commemorative names will be prepared and endorsed by Council later in 2014; a copy of which will be made available by Council to schools, libraries, etc. Those names that are found to be currently in use within the municipality will have their history recorded on the State government's register of geographic names, VICNAMES. There is also scope for names to be used in the future naming of roads, geographic features and localities within Greater Shepparton.
Greater Shepparton Mayor Jenny Houlihan encouraged our community to get involved in this significant project.
"This project will allow the community to research and suggest names to acknowledge men and women in Greater Shepparton who made contributions to Australia and New Zealand's World War I efforts," Cr Houlihan said.
