Greater Shepparton City Councillors tonight voted to keep Andrew Fairley Avenue open at a Special Council Meeting on the Proposal to Discontinue and Sell Part of Andrew Fairley Avenue, Shepparton held at Eastbank.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Jenny Houlihan said the Council took into account the importance of the road to local businesses and the impact it would have on them if the road were closed.
"With 32.2% of business in Shepparton being small business they are an important part of Shepparton's economy and it was obvious there were many who were against the road being closed," said Cr Houlihan.
"I think the decision is a clear message to the community that we do listen to our residents."
"We are not aware of the position of SPCA in relation to their future following this decision by Council."
Councilors passed a new motion that Council will offer full support to SPCA to examine all possible alternatives to redevelop the plant.
