The Tatura Library is set to be refurbished following funds committed by Greater Shepparton City Council, the Victorian Government, Goulburn Valley Libraries and the Tatura Community.
With the up and coming works, Tatura residents are advised of the temporary closure of the Tatura Library at the current Casey Street location from 4 January until the end of June 2020.
The $2 million-dollar redevelopment is to be funded by a $600,000 grant provided by the Victorian Government through the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program, 1.3 million from Greater Shepparton City Council, $20,000 from Goulburn Valley Libraries and a community contribution of $80,000 to be sought through a community fundraising campaign.
Works include extending the building by 240m2 creating additional space and improved access to enable the library to provide a quality, modern public library service for the Tatura community. The revitalised library will also feature a new, more welcoming entrance to the library and the Community House.
As a result of the work required the Tatura Library will be closed temporarily from 4 January until the end of June 2020. Library services will continue via a pop-up library at 155A Hogan Street directly opposite the Post Office, operating from January 14.
“Greater Shepparton City Council is pleased to be able to enhance the library services provided to the Tatura community with this redevelopment”, explains Greater Shepparton City Council Director Community Kaye Thomson.
“While we are aiming to minimise any disruption to library services with the pop-up alternative, the closure of the library is imperative to enable the works to be completed without compromising the safety of library users, Tatura Children’s Centre and Tatura Community House.”
“Tatura Children’s Centre and the Tatura Community House will remain open during the works, with access from Kerferd Street” said Ms Thomson.
Goulburn Valley Libraries, CEO, Mr Kevin Preece adds, “We are excited to be able to breathe new life into the Tatura Library, continuing to provide this critical service during the refurbishment has always been at the forefront so we’re pleased to offer a pop-up service ”.
“We realise there will be some short term inconvenience for the public but the result will be worth it. We are going to have a fantastic library that works much better for library users and will have some new features which will make the experience more enjoyable,” said Mr Preece.
