Greater Shepparton City Council will install solar panels on two Council buildings to save money on power bills and address climate change at a local level.
The new panels will be installed on the main council building at 90 Welsford Street and at the Shepparton Sports Stadium at a cost of $212,000 forming part of Council‘s energy reduction plan to reduce energy by 20 per cent by the year 2020.
Director Sustainable Development Geraldine Christou said “Council is consistently seeking paths to improve the environment we live in and to address climate change. By creating a community that embraces sustainable energy, solutions will provide benefits not only today, but for many generations to come”.
“Council will install solar on two buildings and is estimated to save approximately $30,000 in power costs per year while generating more than 177,000 kWh. This saving in electricity costs will mean greater service delivery for Greater Shepparton residents.
“The solar installations on two of our buildings are designed to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels while saving money using the sun’s free energy” said Ms Christou.
Greater Shepparton City Council has more than 400 local businesses currently using solar within the municipality reducing power bills and assisting to reduce the impacts of climate change.
Installations will be completed by True Value Solar during the month of June 2018. During this period of construction there may be some noise and restrictions in parking access around Council‘s Welsford Street building and the Shepparton Sports Stadium. We ask for the community’s understanding over this short period so we can all benefit for many years to come.
Greater Shepparton businesses interested in improving their environmental performance can apply for Environmental Upgrade Agreements through Council. The EUAs provides low cost loans for building upgrades to improve environmental performance.
