The Greater Shepparton community will celebrate Refugee Week from Sunday 16 to Saturday 22 June.
In 2019, Refugee Week will bring a fresh focus to celebrating through sharing food and stories from around the world. The continuing three-year theme for Refugee Week 2019 in Australia is #WithRefugees.
Each year Council, local organisations and community members organise a number of events to celebrate Refugee Week. The week is aimed at raising awareness of the issues affecting refugees and to celebrate the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society.
On Monday 17 June, Refugee Week will be launched in the region at St Paul's African House from 3-5pm, offering residents the chance to experience Bukjeh. Bukjeh is a visual installation and live performance set within the Kheimeh – a tent modelled after emergency relief tents.
On Wednesday 19 June from 5.15-8.30pm, Village Cinema will host a move night, screening Human Flow, a German documentary film about the global refugee crisis. For bookings head to www.humanflowmovie.eventbrite.com.au
The ultimate aim of the celebration is to create better understanding between different communities and to encourage successful integration, enabling refugees to live in safety and continue making a valuable contribution to Australia.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Cr Kim O’Keeffe encouraged all residents to get involved in the Refugee Week activities.
“Council invites all Greater Shepparton residents to join the wonderful events occurring over Refugee Week,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
“Refugee Week is Australia’s peak annual activity to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees and celebrate the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society.
“Council is committed to continuing to work for a vibrant, cohesive community that celebrates and incorporates aspects of cultural diversity within daily life.”
More information on Refugee Week activities can be found in the events section of Council's website.
