The Greater Shepparton Biennial Bruce Wilson Memorial Heritage Lecture was held on Thursday, 10 May at 1pm and 6pm at the Shepparton Senior Citizens’ Centre.
Over 100 interested members of the public attended the event to gain a greater understanding of how heritage protection in Victoria came about and why it is important to conserve the heritage of our local area.
Guest speaker, Emeritus Professor Graeme Davison AO, the Sir John Monash Distinguished Professor of Monash University, was both knowledgeable and engaging, and was able to share his expert understanding of the topic in a fascinating manner.
Professor Davison is considered to be one of the superstars of Australian history. Council and the Heritage Advisory Committee were honoured to attract such a distinguished guest, which really demonstrates how much the profile of heritage in Greater Shepparton has improved in recent years.
The Heritage Lecture is an important biennial affair that makes up part of the growing calendar of heritage-related events hosted by Greater Shepparton City Council and the Heritage Advisory Committee. Thursday’s event is complemented by the biennial Cultural Heritage Awards and the popular 2017 Heritage Open Day, which will likely feature again on the 2019 events calendar. Council is also celebrating the very successful Heritage Grants Program, which it hopes to continue in future years.
Greater Shepparton’s Mayor, Councillor Kim O’Keeffe, was delighted with the success of the Heritage Lecture and the work of the Heritage Advisory Committee in recent years.
“This municipality might now be said to be at the forefront of local cultural heritage awareness,” said Cr O’Keeffe.
