This month, communities in Greater Shepparton will come together to enjoy National Neighbour Day, building better relationships with those they live near, celebrating their local community and welcoming new neighbours to the area.
A celebration will be held at Dorothy Roche Reserve hosted by Greater Shepparton City Council, with local communities encouraged to come along and enjoy the festivities.
Neighbour Day was founded in 2003 by Andrew Heslop, after an elderly woman was found inside her suburban home two years after passing away. Neighbour Day was then formed as a reminder to connect with elderly neighbours, and has since progressed to an annual celebration of strong communities and friendly streets.
This year, the annual theme for the day is ‘the importance of a supportive neighbourhood for children and young people’, encouraging all Australians to support safe and welcoming communities for families in their neighbourhoods with children and young people.
“Neighbour Day is a fantastic opportunity to create connections with those in your local area in an attempt to prevent isolation and loneliness,” said Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Neighbourhoods Amanda Tingay.
“I encourage residents to take part in the celebrations, get to know your neighbours and build better relationships with those that you live near,” said Ms Tingay.
