The Greater Shepparton 2019 Cultural Heritage Awards are currently open and provide opportunities to raise awareness of those intangible elements of culture and heritage not always obvious.
Intangible elements may be combined with the treatment of the fabric of a place, as in a conservation study or restoration, may relate to the use of and activities at the place, such as a memoir or compilation of multiple recollections, or may encompass other explanatory material, including visual displays, software applications, or tours.
The Awards celebrate and honor people and groups who work to capture the intangible meanings and associations that exist between people and a place, through research, publications, signage, events, tourism activities, and other educational or promotional contributions, as well as the conservation of physical places.
Greater Shepparton has a rich and diverse cultural heritage and these methods of interpretation are important resources for understanding and preserving the cultural significance of our heritage places for present and future generations. Cultural significance may be aesthetic, historic, scientific, social or spiritual, and may have a range of values for different individuals or groups.
Past winners in these categories include:
Coinciding with the Australian Heritage Festival, the 2019 Cultural Heritage Awards will be awarded at a ceremony in April 2019, presented by the Greater Shepparton City Council and the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee.
The nomination process is now underway across the nine categories and closes soon on Friday 7 December.
Nominated work must relate to the five years prior to the closing date on Friday, 7 December 2018. Entries may be nominated in more than one category, with a separate nomination form for each category.
