Greater Shepparton City Council adopted the Shepparton Health and Tertiary Education Precincts Action Plan 2020 at the February Ordinary Council Meeting.
The Action Plan was prepared by the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA), in collaboration with Council, and updates recommendations within the Shepparton Tertiary Education Precinct Plan from 2005, which concentrated on ways to make Shepparton a centre for higher education.
The new Action Plan has acknowledged and built-upon this aspiration, while also taking into account the growing community health component now evident in the Shepparton central business district.
Greater Shepparton is expecting strong growth in both the education and health sectors in the near future; and this plan sets out to understand the needs of the organisations operating in these sectors and those of the wider community.
Through this Action Plan, two health and higher education precincts will be created.
The first is a ‘health and tertiary education hub’ in the Shepparton central business district, including La Trobe University, GOTAFE, the Youth Foyer, Community Health @ GV Health and Genesis Care Radiation Therapy.
The second is the ‘Graham Street Precinct’, including the University of Melbourne Shepparton Rural Clinical School, GV Health, and the proposed GV Health and La Trobe University Clinical School.
Council Mayor, Cr Seema Abdullah, said she was looking forward to building upon Shepparton’s key role as a higher education and health hub.
“Through this Action Plan, the community will see a push to promote Shepparton as a significant regional hub for both community health and higher education,” Cr Abdullah said.
“Council thanks the Victorian Planning Authority for preparing the Action Plan, and GOTAFE, GV Health, La Trobe University and other relevant stakeholders for helping to develop this Action Plan. Council looks forward to the realisation of the many benefits that the Action Plan will have for Greater Shepparton and our community.”
Dean Rochfort, VPA Acting Executive Director Regional Victoria, said health and education provision is an important aspect of Shepparton’s economic future and continued role as a key regional city and service provider for northern Victoria.
“The Action Plan has been prepared with involvement from key health and tertiary education organisations as well as our other government partners. It sets an exciting framework to attract both public and private investment to grow Shepparton as a community health and tertiary education destination.”
