Greater Shepparton City Council adopted the revised Waste and Resource Recovery Management Strategy 2013–2023 at the May Ordinary Council.
Council adopted the original 2013-2023 Waste and Resource Recovery Management Strategy and action plan in 2013. The strategy included a mid-term review that has now been completed to deliver this revised strategy.
The aim of the strategy was to deliver waste and recycling services that achieved a balance between accessibility, affordability and sustainability. It also aimed to reduce waste to landfill, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase reuse and recycling.
Consultation on the revised strategy ended on 1 February 2019. A total of 105 submissions were received during the consultation period.
The majority of submissions received supported the recommendations and actions listed in the revised strategy, mainly citing the environmental benefits of a three-bin system. The feedback also supported the current services available at the Resource Recovery Centres.
A number of submissions also supported more efforts on waste education, to encourage community engagement and self-responsibility for sorting waste at home.
The revised strategy aims to achieve positive environmental outcomes through:
Mayor Cr Kim O’Keeffe said Council was pleased to adopt the revised strategy.
“This strategy was originally adopted in 2013 to make waste and recycling services easier to use for our residents,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
“After consultation with the Greater Shepparton community, we are confident this revised strategy achieves that goal.”
This updated strategy will guide the achievement of environmental and waste management goals and objectives as outlined in the Council Plan 2017-2021 and Victorian Government policies and legislation.
