Greater Shepparton City Council awarded the following contracts for the Greater Shepparton Regional Sports Precinct at the recent council meeting.
The balance of Precinct Works tender was awarded to Mawson Constructions for the construction of the East/West Linking roadway, roundabouts, footpaths, stormwater, car parks, fencing and street lighting at the cost of $4.3 million funded by Australian Government and Greater Shepparton City Council.
This main roadway will link the Numurkah Road entrance with Packham Street. Mawson Construction has been advised that all recreation facilities will need to remain accessible to pedestrians while works are conducted. Vehicle access will be very limited except for emergency vehicles. Works will begin in July and will take approximately seven months to complete depending on weather.
Council also awarded the tender to Tuff Turf N Co for the upgrade to the Athletics track. Works will cost $890 thousand funded by Australian Government, Greater Shepparton City Council and Shepparton Little Athletics.
Work will involve the removal of the turf track and the installation of a synthetic running track and a synthetic area will also be constructed to provide space for two high jump areas and a javelin run-up area. Construction works will take six months. During this time the Little Athletics Association will relocate to the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve to conduct their competition from October to December this year.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Dinny Adem said “Now with the boulevard and athletics track contracts being awarded we will begin to really see the changes at the sports precinct”.
“I would also like to thank the Little Athletics Association for their understanding and patience for being relocated during the works. I am sure the short term relocation will be worthwhile in the long term for a new athletics track,” said Cr Adem.
The overall Greater Shepparton Regional Sports Precinct is a $19m redevelopment; this investment will establish the precinct as a nationally significant sporting complex. The redevelopment will enhance Council’s ability to secure and retain new major sporting events and national championships that might normally be held in capital cities or interstate.
Greater Shepparton Regional Sports Precinct total redevelopment will include:
