Work to deliver a safer and more connected cycling corridor for Shepparton residents is underway with safety improvements on Corio Street, Graham Street and Monash Street.
Regional Roads Victoria has worked closely with Greater Shepparton City Council to implement already-identified routes for the Safer Cycling Corridor.
The routes were identified in the Greater Shepparton Cycling Strategy 2013 and the recently adopted Shepparton and Mooroopna 2050: Regional City Growth Plan. The works will improve safety by creating dedicated cycle routes and encourage more residents to cycle.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development, Geraldine Christou, said “having such a flat topography, Shepparton is ideally suited to cycling for recreational and commuter purposes.
“A safer cycling network encourages our community to be active and can change attitudes towards alternative transport. The more people that choose cycling instead of driving helps contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions,” said Ms Christou.
Graham, Corio and Monash Streets provide cyclist access to the Shepparton CBD, residential areas, and health and education facilities.
These streets will be made safer for cyclists with improvements including:
Whether on a bike or in a vehicle, it’s important to share the road, travel at a safe speed and obey the road rules.
Victorian road rules require that when drivers pass a bicycle rider, they leave a space of at least one metre between their vehicle and the cyclist in speed zones 60km/h or lower, and 1.5 metres when passing in a speed zone over 60km/h.
If you’re riding a bicycle, continue to look out for left-turning vehicles ahead. If you’re in a vehicle, use your mirrors and do a head check before turning left to ensure that the bike lane is clear before you start your turn.
You must always give way to riders already in the bike lane and only turn when safe to do so.

Regional Roads Victoria would love to hear your feedback on their plans for Safer Cycling Corridor improvements on Graham, Corio and Monash Streets in Shepparton. Send your submissions, comments or questions to ner.enquiries@roads.vic.gov.au Submissions received before 5 November will help plan for installation of the safety improvements.
