Greater Shepparton City Council is reminding residents to register their cats and dogs before Thursday 10 April 2025 to ensure their pets are safe, identifiable, and legally compliant.
In Summary
All cats and dogs over three months of age must be registered, with free registration available for pets under six months old.
Council’s Director Sustainable Development, Geraldine Christou, said pet registration plays a crucial role in reuniting lost pets with their owners and funding essential animal services.
“Registering your pet is simple and affordable, with desexed animals costing as little as $50 per year, and additional discounts available for pensioners,” she said.
“Many pet owners may not realise that their registration fees help fund essential services, including reuniting lost pets with their owners, responding to animal welfare concerns, and promoting responsible pet management to keep our community safe.”
All animals must be microchipped before they can be registered. In addition, all cats must be desexed before registration unless exempt under the Domestic Animals Act 1994. When registering a pet, owners must provide necessary documents such as microchipping and desexing certificates, as well as any applicable concession cards to qualify for discounts.
Eligible residents holding a Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card may be able to access support through the PAWS Program, which provides assistance with desexing, microchipping, and registering cats for a nominal fee. Applications for this program close on Monday 31 March 2025.
“Identification tags, which are provided upon registration, help ensure lost pets can be quickly identified and returned home,” Mrs Christou said.
“Residents with pets already registered will have received a renewal notice in the mail as a reminder. By ensuring pets are registered, microchipped, and properly identified, residents contribute to a safer and more responsible community.”
New pet registrations can be completed online via the Council website or in person at Council’s Customer Service Centre at 90 Welsford Street, Shepparton.
