Greater Shepparton City Council is advising locals that this weekend's National Tree Day has been postponed due to the recent wet conditions.
The local National Tree Day event is now taking place in Tassicker Reserve at 100 Kittles Road, Shepparton, on Sunday August 21. Activities start from 10.00am until 2.00pm with a free BBQ provided.
To date this month, the Shepparton area has experienced already 67.2mm of rainfall. Year to date, the area has experienced 345.2mm in total.
This makes for muddy conditions that will hamper the planned tree planting event.
“National Tree Day is the perfect opportunity to continue the great work from last year’s efforts and connect with nature and the local community. Many residents will be aware we have been busy planting in this reserve for the last few years, by continuing our efforts this year and next year at this location enables to reserve to be fully planted with trees. Once this reserve is completed we will then work on another reserve in the next few years,” said Mayor Dinny Adem.
“Trees and plants provide great areas for many residents to enjoy when out an about or simply for aesthetic reasons. So why not get involved on Sunday 21 August,” said Cr Adem.
National Tree Day is Australia’s largest tree-planting and nature care event. Each year over 200,000 people take part in National Tree Day events at 3,000 sites organised by councils, schools, businesses, communities and Toyota Dealers across the country. Since Planet Ark launched National Tree Day in 1996, more than three million participants have planted 21 million native trees, shrubs and grasses.
National Tree Day is organised by Planet Ark in partnership with Toyota and its Dealer Network, which provides on the ground support at local community tree planting sites Australia-wide.
