The Mooroopna Community Plan 2022-2026 was noted at Greater Shepparton City Council’s October Council Meeting, following a community engagement process which identified key themes and priorities of the Mooroopna community.
The plan was first developed in 2010, and since this time has played an important role in driving community priorities and projects throughout the town.
The Mooroopna Community Plan Steering Group consulted with the community to identify 50 actions for implementation over the next five years. Some of their highest priorities include safety and accessibility of the Mooroopna Railway Station, shared paths and advocacy around the future use of the Mooroopna High School and old Mooroopna Hospital sites. Other important actions include community arts projects, culture and history, youth engagement, economic development and tourism.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali said the Mooroopna Community Plan Steering Group had delivered multiple key actions since its establishment in 2010.
“During this time some of the key achievements have included arts grants, more activities for youth, town entry signage, advocacy around the Mooroopna train station re-development and increased safety and accessibility of shared paths,” he said.
“The Steering Group have led some really positive outcomes for Mooroopna. The 2022-2026 Plan includes an updated list of priorities which Council will continue to work alongside the community to achieve.”
In completing this revised plan, the Mooroopna Community Plan Steering Group actively consulted with the community through surveys, individual business visits, emails, face-to-face conversations, social media and a Councillor bus tour.
To achieve the actions identified within the 2022-2026 Plan, the Community Plan Steering Group will partner with community, business, Council and other government bodies to advocate and identify funding opportunities.
“Community planning is led by the community. The purpose is to give local people greater ownership over their small town or neighbourhood by empowering them to take a proactive role in shaping the future of the areas in which they live,” Cr Sali said.
“The current flood event in Mooroopna will also have a role to play in helping shape this plan moving forward to ensure the best possible results for the town. We look forward to seeing some positive results implemented for the Mooroopna community as a result of this revised Plan.”
