Memory unlocked! Careful Cobber Cars to be displayed at the Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre

Loaned by the Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE), the Careful Cobber Cars will be on display from Monday 23 December until Friday 31 January 2025 at the Greater Shepparton Visitor Centre, located at the Shepparton Art Museum precinct 530 Wyndham Street, Shepparton.

The Careful Cobber program at the Driver Education Centre of Australia (DECA) was a road safety program for primary school children to learn road safety in motorised cars. For many locals this experience became a cherished childhood memory, learning the rules of the road and driving the cobbers around the tracks.

Residents and visitors can drop in and take their photos with these emblematic little cars. To complement the experience an array of kids’ activities will also be on offer, including colouring, play cars and a mock driving ground - complete with road signs. Information about the history of the Careful Cobber driving program will also be on display.

This activation provides an opportunity to highlight safe driving messages, including the TAC's Pause Stop Program, of which the Visitor Centre is a Premium Pause Stop location. As well as the perfect occasion for Visitor Centre staff and volunteers to promote one of Shepparton and Goulburn Valley’s key attractions, the Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE) during the school holiday period.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, encouraged residents and visitors to head down to the Visitor Centre and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

“We invite community members and visitors to take the family and enjoy this wonderful piece of local history on display. The Careful Cobber Cars are an iconic piece of Greater Shepparton’s history, and we are so lucky for the opportunity to have them on showcase at the Visitor Centre,” he said.

“Many of us have fantastic memories of the Cobbers! I am looking forward to bringing the kids and sharing in some of these memories with them, while also enjoying some of the activities available.

“A big thank you to the Museum of Vehicle Evolution for loaning the Careful Cobber Cars to Council, allowing the community to engage with the cars and unlock some memories.”

A media opportunity will be taking place at the opening event on Monday 23 December at 10am at the Visitor Centre, with Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali in attendance as well as Jenny Houlihan, Coordinator of the Careful Cobber Program at DECA when it was in operation.
