Today Mayor Cr. Dinny Adem welcomed runners on the The Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run as they stopped in Shepparton's Maude Street Mall. Founded in 1987, the run has blossomed to include more than 140 countries around the world.
The torch that is run with is pass from hand to hand represents humanity’s aspirations, hopes and dreams for peace.
In the words of founder, Sri Chinmoy, “The Peace Run is our way of saying that world peace must begin within the heart of each of us, and that only by transcending the barriers that divide us from our better selves as well as from others, will our world be a true Oneness-Home.”
Mayor Cr. Dinny Adem spoke to the team of runners prior to receiving a special gift.
"I would first like to acknowledge Dr Tiho Djordjic, and Saranyu Pearson who have coordinated the Peace Run coming to Shepparton.
The Peace Run is a global torch relay which unites thousands of communities and millions of people across the world. The aim of the Peace Run is to spread goodwill throughout the world.
By passing the torch from one person to the next, the relay offers people from many nations the opportunity to express their hopes and dreams for a better, brighter future.
People from all walks of life hold the symbolic torch to wish for a peaceful world. Passing the torch from one person to the next unites us together in our common aspiration to offer something positive to our world – together we can make a difference!
I would like to congratulate each of you here today for taking part in this wonderful global relay event and I hope that by taking part in the Peace Run, we can all contribute to a more positive society."
