Major drainage upgrades completed on Marungi Street

Greater Shepparton City Council is pleased to announce the completion of the Marungi Street Urban Drainage Project, following a series of works carried out from October last year.

Following the 2022 flood event, the brick trunk drain collapsed under Marungi Street, causing several sinkholes in the road pavement. Emergency repairs were undertaken at the time to address the immediate issues.

The project consisted of several stages, including the removal of the entire existing brick drain and concrete pipelines to prevent future collapses. Historical plans suggest the original infrastructure was first constructed in 1911.

Construction work for the project included the installation of a new concrete pit and drainage pipeline. The new infrastructure services the current drainage catchment and meets modern standards.

Final works involved the decommissioning of redundant stormwater infrastructure within the roundabout, along with coordinating adjacent asphalt surface works in Nixon Street, which were completed last week.

Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, thanked residents and businesses in the area for their patience during the works.

“The new infrastructure provides confidence to residents and road users, and is an important investment in long-term infrastructure, with the new underground system meeting required demand for generations to come,” he said.

“We not only continue to invest in community projects, but we are also committed to investing in essential infrastructure.”

Council’s Director Infrastructure, Gary Randhawa, said the project was a team effort.

“This was a significant project, involving several Council staff and local contractors across a number of months. I would like to thank everyone involved in the successful delivery of this project,” he said.

The total project cost was $667,000 and funded by the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery program.
