Greater Shepparton City Council is excited to be recognised for its efforts in celebrating our community’s diversity by being a finalist in the 2020 Keep Victoria Beautiful Sustainable City Awards.
Council submitted two nominations for the social well-being category, nominating St Georges Road Food Festival and Carols by Candlelight as the two local events add to the wellbeing of the community through social inclusion and increasing community happiness. Both were announced as a finalist on Friday 2 October.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development Geraldine Christou said it was an incredible achievement for the community.
“It is important for Council to deliver events for the entire community to enjoy and be a part of. The St Georges Road Food Festival and Carols by Candlelight are two events on our calendar led by the community, for the community. Thank you to all the volunteers and community groups that come together and create these events for everyone to enjoy. Being a finalist in these awards is a way to celebrate and recognise the efforts of the many people involved in delivering these events for our community and visitors,” Ms Christou said.
The St Georges Road Food Festival was recognised for helping create an inclusive community by educating our residents and visitors on the different cultures in our region and the many businesses in the St Georges Road Precinct catering to our diverse needs.
Every year the community comes together with family and friends for Carols by Candlelight and was recognised for providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone to celebrate the year together.
“This year has seen a sudden dip in our events program due to the restrictions around large gatherings however this has not stopped our community from supporting one another and employing innovative practices to keep our community spirits up and businesses busy,” Ms Christou said.
“We cannot wait to welcome the return of these events in the future and with everyone’s help they can be better than ever before.”
The Keep Victoria Beautiful awards will be announced via a virtual ceremony on Thursday 12 November.
