In late 2023, Shepparton businesses Furphy Foundry and J. Furphy & Sons celebrated 150 years since the company founder moved operations to Shepparton from Kyneton – thus establishing an Australian manufacturing icon. The event, held at The Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE) Shepparton, was well attended by residents within Greater Shepparton and surrounds.
Mayor, Cr Shane Sali, spoke at the event where the Furphy businesses were kind enough to present one of the tank ends to Council, to proudly display in the Customer Service area of the Council building.
“The history behind Furphy is a great Australian story and the family is ambitious to keep growing what are already leading businesses here in Shepparton,” he said.
“Not only do the Furphy family make a significant contribution to the local economy but they are a great example of how businesses can evolve, with a focus on modern and sustainable methods.”
The Furphy’s were among the first ten families to settle in Shepparton. J. Furphy & Sons Managing Director, Adam Furphy, said the location remains the heartbeat of the business.
“We are really proud of the heritage of our businesses and the tank end is a perfect symbol of the Furphy story. We have a really deep relationship with not only customers and suppliers, but the community at large,” he said.
Furphy Foundry Managing Director, Sam Furphy, said the businesses had an important relationship with Council and they were happy to present a tank end to be displayed proudly inside the Council office.
“When the opportunity arose we were more than happy to present a tank end for Council to display. We have a great relationship with Council that spans over decades and generations of the Furphy family,” he said.
Council look forward to recognising the Furphy family’s achievements within the community and are pleased to showcase this special tank end to commemorate 150 years.
