Greater Shepparton City Council nominated Councillor Geoff Akers and community member Geoff Dobson as representatives of Council for Region 2 of the Murray Darling Association, at its February Council Meeting on Tuesday.
In Summary
The Murray Darling Association (MDA) is a Local Government member-based organisation that advocates for effective representation of communities at state and federal levels in managing Murray Darling Basin resources. The MDA provides information, facilitates debate, and works to influence government policy on behalf of its members.
Council is part of Region 2 of the MDA, alongside Moira Shire Council, Federation Council, and Murray Irrigation (a non-Local Government member). Meetings are held at least four times a year, either in person or online, with locations rotating between members’ Local Government Areas.
As a member of the MDA, Council is required to nominate a Councillor Representative. The MDA Constitution was amended in 2024 to also enable an Independent Community Representative to be nominated by a member Council.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, congratulated both Cr Akers and community member and former Councillor Geoff Dobson on their appointment.
“Congratulations to Cr Akers on being appointed as the Councillor Representative for Region 2. As a local dairy farmer, he has a vested interest and understanding of the Basin and a desire to contribute to positive outcomes for the community and the environment,” he said.
“It is fantastic that Geoff Dobson is wanting to volunteer his time and support Cr Akers as the Councillor Representative. Geoff was a strong and knowledgeable advocate through the MDA during his time with Council. The MDA is fortunate to be able to retain his understanding of the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead in managing Basin resources.”
Cr Akers said he looked forward to working with the MDA to ensure healthy, connected rivers, regional development and sustainable communities.
“The MDA work with member councils and communities to develop leadership, identify local solutions, and build resilience across the Murray Darling Basin,” he said.
“I look forward to representing our region at a state and federal level.”
