Greater Shepparton City Council noted the consultation undertaken on the Strategic Cycling Corridors Plan (the Plan) to connect the Shepparton Railway Station to Victoria Park Lake and the Greater Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC) at the 21 June Ordinary Council Meeting.
The Plan forms part of the Victorian Government’s Strategic Cycling Corridors (SCC) for Greater Shepparton which supports commuter and other trips, such as to railway stations, shops or schools, employment and activity centres, and other regional destinations.
The draft designs provide for both on and off-road connections along Hayes Street, Baker Street, Purcell Street, St Georges Road, Thompson Street and Railway Parade in Shepparton. The upgrades identified in the draft designs allow for improved safety outcomes for both cyclists and pedestrians; strengthening the connectivity within the eastern areas of Shepparton.
Council conducted community consultation on the draft SCC designs with local residents and businesses between 1 April and 2 May 2022, with a total of 12 submissions received.
“The support for the cycling corridor was pleasing to see. Whilst we didn’t receive a lot of community feedback it was quite positive,” said Mayor, Cr Shane Sali.
“Providing a safer cycling route for secondary school students and others is really important and I’m glad to see we are progressing this project.”
Council will use feedback from submissions to prepare the final designs for the SCCs and seek funding for construction from the Victorian Government.
