Elections are just around the corner in Greater Shepparton and Chief Executive Officer, Peter Harriott is encouraging community-minded citizens to consider standing for council.
Mr Harriott said now was the time for potential candidates to learn more about what’s involved in standing for council and planning an election campaign.
“Becoming a councillor is a great opportunity to influence the future direction of the local community.
“If you are over 18 and on the electoral roll for the council area, the chances are you are eligible to stand for council.
“Communities are made up of a diverse mix of people, therefore we encourage people from all walks of life to nominate as a candidate; no matter your occupation, cultural background, gender, or whether you are retired, a business person, a stay-at-home parent or a university student, all are welcome to join the election race.”
Peter Harriott said Greater Shepparton delivered more than 100 community services and was responsible for $1.36billion worth of infrastructure and assets, therefore potential candidates needed to understand the breadth of their responsibilities and decision-making.
Greater Shepparton has joined a statewide Stand for Council campaign to encourage citizens to consider standing for council and to help candidates understand what is involved in becoming a councillor.
“Deciding to stand for council is a big decision. A councillor’s role is exciting but also demanding, and prospective candidates should find out what’s involved before nominating for election,” said Mr Harriott
“A dedicated website has been launched where candidates can check their eligibility to stand for council and find out more about the day-to-day activities of a councillor. There is a link to the website on Council’s website or you can visit it direct by going to www.standforcouncil.com.au.
“Council will also host a public information session at 7pm on Thursday 21 July at the Greater Shepparton Council Offices where prospective candidates can hear first-hand from experienced councillors from nearby councils about what the role entails,” said Mr Harriott
To register for the MAV information session, visit http://greatershepparton.com.au/council-elections or contact Council’s Governance Department on (03) 5832 9700.
Elections for Greater Shepparton City Council will be conducted by postal voting. Ballot packs will be distributed to all residents on the electoral roll between Tuesday 4 and Thursday 6 October and must be received by the VEC by 6pm on Friday 21 October.
The Victorian Electoral Commission will also be holding an information session for potential candidates at 6pm on Monday 12 September at the Council Office. To find out more about the election process, visit the VEC website.
