Greater Shepparton City Council’s RiverConnect program is proud to be celebrating 20 years of success in the region, since its inception in 2005.
In Summary
Over the past two decades, RiverConnect has played a significant role in developing a strong appreciation and care for our region’s river environment through community events and education programs.
To mark the occasion, a celebratory event was held on Friday 21 November 2025, at Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton, to reflect on the significant achievements of the program over the past 20 years.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said the program’s success is a testament to the many agency and community partners who have played a role in fostering Greater Shepparton’s connection to the river environment.
RiverConnect’s mission is to foster the community's love, respect and connection to the river environment through engaging events, collaborative projects and an inspiring education program. Over the past two decades, RiverConnect has significantly increased the care for, access to, awareness of and participation in the river environment and our shared cultural heritage.
RiverConnect Community Advisory Committee Councillor Representative Cr Steven Threlfall, McEwen Ward, said the program contributes to the region’s nature and environment.
RiverConnect partners with a wide range of organisations, including Traditional Owners, schools, environmental groups, and government agencies, to deliver meaningful outcomes for the region. The program is managed under the auspice of Greater Shepparton City Council and is jointly funded with the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority.
Council’s Director Sustainable Development, Geraldine Christou said the program has led to a broader impact on the region’s connections.
The RiverConnect Strategic Plan continues to guide the program’s direction, ensuring it remains responsive to community needs and environmental priorities. To find out more, visit the RiverConnect website or follow their socials on Facebook or Instagram: @riverconnect
