Greater Shepparton City Council will officially launch its Climate Emergency Action Plan on Tuesday 7 March at The Woolshed, with industry speakers discussing the local impacts of climate change.
In March 2020, Council declared a Climate Emergency and set a 2030 Zero Emissions Target, after local residents, including youth, called for Council to demonstrate leadership to address greenhouse gas emissions. In December 2021, Council adopted a 2030 Zero Emissions Plan.
Earlier this year, Council consultation occurred with local business, agricultural growers and community members and groups, on the Our Climate Safe Future (Greater Shepparton’s Climate Emergency Action Plan), with feedback received formulating the Final Action Plan.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Shane Sali, said it has been encouraging to see this hard work beginning to take shape.
“Local businesses, the agricultural industry and community members have been working together to achieve a common goal. This plan will direct Council’s support for community and industry to reduce emissions, while maximising opportunities for a sustainable and prosperous future.”
“The Action Plan has highlighted opportunities to adopt cheaper energy practices, taking advantage of our proximity to existing and expanding electricity infrastructure and freight ports. The Action Plan also provides direction on future city design, to include green townships that provide shade in the heat and incorporate safe cycling and walking.”
