The eligibility criteria for receiving the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine has changed and is now available to anyone who lives, works or spends time outdoors that places them at risk of mosquito bites in the Greater Shepparton area.
Japanese Encephalitis is a rare but potentially serious infection of the brain. It is caused by the Japanese Encephalitis virus which is transmitted to humans through infected mosquitoes. Avoiding mosquito bites is the best way to prevent Japanese Encephalitis and other mosquito-borne diseases.
Most Japanese Encephalitis virus infections are asymptomatic, with less than one per cent of people developing clinical disease. Illness usually begins with a sudden onset of fever, headache and vomiting, with more serious symptoms developing in the following days, including generalised weakness and movement disorders.
Greater Shepparton City Council has plenty of single dose Japanese Encephalitis vaccines available for residents. To view available vaccination days and book an appointment online.
The vaccines are being administered at Riverlinks Studio, 70 Welsford Street, Shepparton (the old SAM entrance). Welsford Street remains open to pedestrians despite the roadworks. Access to the Riverlinks Studio and Council Office is not affected.
For further information about the vaccine, please contact Council’s Environmental Health Department on (03) 5832 9700.
