Greater Shepparton City Council is encouraging locals to take the plunge into a meaningful new career, with Aquamoves offering a fast-tracked opportunity to become a qualified Swim Instructor through a two-day AUSTSWIM course this June.
In Summary
The upcoming course will be held on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June and is open to anyone looking to step into a flexible, community-focused role. Priced at $449, the course offers an accessible first step into the aquatics industry.
Once certified, course participants will be eligible to apply for a Cadet Swim Instructor role at Aquamoves, with job applications open from Friday 30 May and closing Sunday 15 June 2025.
To support new instructors as they transition into the workforce, Aquamoves is offering paid shadow hours as part of the Cadet program. This hands-on experience allows successful applicants to build confidence in the water while learning from experienced instructors in a real-world setting.
Aquamoves Centre Manager, Liliana Angeles, said the initiative responds to a critical need for more Swim Instructors in the region.
“This initiative opens the door for people who might never have considered this career path,” she said.
“With just two days of training, followed by paid in-pool experience and ongoing support, we are creating a clear, supported pathway into a role that genuinely changes lives in our community.”
The region, like many across Victoria, has experienced a shortage of qualified instructors — limiting the availability of Learn to Swim programs for local families. By creating a direct and supported pathway into the role, Aquamoves aims to remove common barriers to entry such as cost, experience, and uncertainty around how to get started.
Aquamoves Program and Education Coordinator, Michelle Quast, said the program is designed to reduce barriers and provide real support from day one.
“We know there are people in our community who would make incredible swim teachers, but they’ve never known where to start,” she said.
“This course is a simple, supported entry point. You train for two days, apply for a role, and if successful, you step straight into a paid cadetship where you can build your skills on the job with guidance from our experienced team.”
Swim Instructors play a vital role in helping children build essential water safety skills that stay with them for life. The opportunity is ideal for parents, university students, and anyone seeking flexible work that fits around school hours or other commitments.
Applicants will need to hold a current Working with Children Check and CPR accreditation at the time of applying for the Cadet Swim Instructor role.
Interested individuals can register for the course now at https://shepp.city/swiminstructor
Course enrolments close at midnight on Friday 6 June 2025.
Once certified, job applications can be submitted via Council's employment webpage here.
