What is elder abuse?
Elder abuse can take many forms including financial, emotional, psychological, physical, sexual and social abuse. It can occur once or repeatedly and is most commonly carried out by someone known to the older person, including adult children, family members or friends.
National research found that 14.8 per cent of Australians aged 65 years and over experienced at least one recognised form of elder abuse over a 12-month period. This equates to an estimated 160,000 older Victorians experiencing elder abuse each year.
