Running a business can feel isolating. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to grow, having someone to talk things through with can make a real difference.
The Business Mentoring Program connects local business owners with experienced mentors for practical, one-on-one conversations focused on real challenges. Mentors give practical guidance, share their experience, offer perspective and help you clarify your goals and next steps to guide your thinking, all in a supportive and confidential environment.
Mentoring sessions are informal, in person and designed to fit around your business. It’s an opportunity to build confidence, strengthen decision-making and connect with the local business community.
About the program
Council’s first Business Mentor Program ran from May to July 2026. The program brought together new and emerging local businesses with experienced local mentors for two structured 60-minute mentoring sessions.
Each session was designed to help mentees explore their goals, work through challenges and build confidence in areas such as planning, cashflow, marketing, digital capability, human resources and business resilience. Mentoring sessions were informal, in person and tailored to each business.

How do I become a mentor?
We are currently not seeking any mentors for the program, however if you are interested in participating in future programs, please get in touch with Council’s Economic Development Engagement Coordinator on 5832 9850 or email council@shepparton.vic.gov.au
What if it’s not the right fit?
A check-in will occur after your first meeting. If you feel the match isn’t right, you can let Council know and we will try to match you with another mentor.
It is important to note that mentors offer honest, experience-based advice. At times their feedback may feel challenging, but it’s designed to strengthen your decision making and provide genuine guidance, not just reassurance.
What if I’m not selected for the program?
Unsuccessful applicants may be placed on a waitlist and contacted if a place becomes available for future Business Mentor Programs.
Will my contact details be shared with program participants?
