Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
Category: Sports Hall of Fame
Sport: Speedway Racing
The sport of speedway racing has seen one of its great supporters honoured tonight in Barry Myers. We now have the pleasure of inducting Barry’s son Dennis into the Hall of Fame. It was evident that Dennis was born to race, growing up in a family that loved and put so much effort into motor sport. As a youngster, Dennis naturally attended the race meetings at the Goulburn Valley Auto Club as his father was the founding president. Dennis was hooked at an early age and all he wanted to do was drive racing cars.
At eighteen years of age Dennis raced a sedan car on the local speedway tracks, but soon fell in love with open wheelers. He raced in a class called Grand Prix Midgets and loved every minute of it.
He joined the Geelong car club to give him the chance to race against better competition and every weekend could be seen heading off to race at tracks across Victoria and Interstate. His efforts paid off and he started winning races against top opposition.
He rose through the ranks to be contesting races against the best drivers in the Nation. He won Zone series in the North East and Central Victorian Zones and then moved up to become Victorian champion, a title he won 6 times and he also won the New South Wales title. At the top level Dennis won the Australian Grand Prix Midget championship twice and was ten times the Midget Master Series champion. In 2005 Dennis was awarded Life Membership of the Victorian Grand Prix Midget Racing Association. Dennis has won hundreds of races across the country representing the GV Auto Club.
It was no surprise to see him selected as Victorian driver of the year which he accomplished in 2009 and 2010. The G.V. Auto Club bestowed the honour of Life membership on Dennis, he was inducted into the clubs Hall of Fame and then elevated to “Legend” status in 2016 during the club’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.
