In the sport of Cricket, Shepparton is yet to boast an Australian Test player. However Shepparton has produced some very good cricketers who have represented the state of Victoria.
The Central Park/ St. Brendan’s Cricket Club is very proud of long time player and coach Rohan Larkin who reached the heights of interstate cricket and returned to play an integral role in the clubs success including being captain of 7 premiership teams.
Rohan showed his class as a local junior at St. Mels and Notre Dame before making his way into the Central Park St. Brendans team. He was a class batsman and a spin bowler who cemented himself as a top player.
He was selected to represent Shepparton at Melbourne Country week and it was in a Country Week game at Princess Park that he and his mate Brian Doyle came under the notice of the Carlton Cricket Club. Both players were recruited by the Blues and that commenced a 10 year career for Rohan with Carlton.
His performances saw him elevated to the State squad and proudly represent Victoria. He played Sheffield shield cricket from 1994 – 1997 and One day cricket for Victoria from 1992 – 1998.
Rohan was also selected to play for Victoria against international touring teams, England, New Zealand, Pakistan and the West Indies.
Following his time at Carlton he became the Captain – Coach of Footscray Cricket club for 2 years then came back to the Goulburn Valley in the position of Regional Cricket Development Officer.
He joined Stanhope Cricket club for 3 years winning 2 premierships before returning to Central park club where he was a sensation as Captain Coach. Under Rohan’s guidance the club won 9 Haisman shield premierships, 8 one day premierships and 5 T 20 premierships.
His love of playing for his association continued as he was captain of Cricket Shepparton over 10 years, he was voted cricketer of the year twice, won the Bert Lightfoot medal, duel Greg Luscombe medals and won the A Grade batting average 4 times.
Rohan is a Life Member of the Central Park St. Brendan’s club where he amassed 7291 runs with 17 hundreds and 37 half centuries with an average of 52. He also took 144 wickets.
It is no surprise that he was awarded Life Membership of the Club and a place in the Central Park St. Brendan’s “Team of 25 years”.
Not only was he the clubs best ever player but he took on duties such as committee member, grants co-ordinator, club secretary. Junior’s co-ordinator, junior coach and team manager.
Rohan Larkin will always be remembered as one of the finest cricketers to represent Shepparton and his commitment and contribution to the game is the reason why he is being inducted as a roll of honour member of the Sports Hall of Fame.
